Hey guys,

I thought this would be a good place to share this information. After the last night of the Alumni Road Trip I am taking out on the west coast, I will be staying in Las Vegas for a couple of extra days.

WHY?

I just landed an interview with two of the three horn players of the band, Chicago. Lee Loughnane and Walt Parazaider both have agreed to interviews with me before their concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 19. Unfortunately, James Pankow will not be with them at these performances.

The results of the interview will be in the fall 2008 issue of The Sinfonian.

Fraternally,

Dan Krueger

Fund set up for IWU fire victims

Fund set up for IWU fire victims

BLOOMINGTON Illinois Wesleyan University has set up a fund to help the 15 students whose belongings were largely lost in a blaze caused by an electrical problem Sunday at Phi Mu Alpha fraternity, 303 E. Chestnut St.

Checks may be sent to the IWU Foundation, Box 2900, Bloomington, IL, 61702-2900, with PMA in the check memo line, said Darcy Greder, associate dean of students.

She noted nearly 80 percent of IWU students get financial aid and most work at campus jobs and an increasing number also work off-campus.

They're missing everything from coats to shoes to toiletries and laptops, she said. These are more than possessions. They ground you and they're familiar. It's all gone.

Scott Irlbacher

412.951.5542

"This it is to be a man of the highest type. To be and not to seem; to do and not simply to talk; to have the right ideal, the true motive and patiently to transform conduct in accordance with it."

- Ossian Everett Mills

Attack on the Sinfonian Radio 1898 main server

All is well now as we have chnaged our IP... An attack was made last week on the Sinfonian Radio 1898 server that disrupted the website for a few days. The streams were not affected... the music did play on during this threat. :)

This attack was the attempt of a creative spammer who tried to bring us down. They attempted to over load the server with scripts they were running that bogged the server down. It made the server load high. To repair the situation I was forced to change ips on the website.

The flame burns on!
Tommy

A Story: The Man Who May Not Have Been A Sinfonian

The Man Who May Not Have Been A Sinfonian

Yes, it's true. The man in this story could very easily have not become a Sinfonian. He walked across the campus of Indiana State University, a musician no less, but rather, as someone whose vision was not really his own. It was societies vision of who he should be. The curricular choices he made early on were those “practical” choices most people would make. Somewhere along his journey it became clear that he was not being true to himself, the musician and against many others desire he decided to pursue a musical education. He saw the disbelief, shock and wonderment in the others eyes, knowing that they think he is foolish in this new endeavor.

So, against the stream his musical journey begins. He walked and studied in the music department, an outsider, and a loner, not unfriendly to others but clearly not among the crowd. He had seen Sinfonians. There presence was ever apparent in the music department. He could only wish that he was still in his youth, maybe then he could even dream of being a Sinfonian.

He worked very hard at both his Computer and Musical studies. At times not wishing the extra performance burden had been placed upon him. The logical and mathematical requirements of his major were let alone enough, but he continued on. Apparently not unnoticed by the Phi Mu Alpha Brotherhood. Soon he was being asked to not sit by himself in the lunchroom, to come and join others from the music department. Little did he know what was about to unfold for him on this journey?

So now it’s a cold January day and he is eating in the lunchroom with other musicians. Just another day, like so many others. He is in his eighth semester now, the third of his music degree. He is left sitting with John when the unimaginable happened. John asked him if he had ever thought about joining Phi Mu Alpha and invited him to come the their smoker. He was in disbelief, he would have pinched himself to see if this was real but he had already blurted out his reply, which pleased John.

Later that afternoon having finished his day’s studies, now at home, he decides to share with his partner the news regarding his acceptance to go to the Sinfonians smoker. She almost chuckled, asking him, “What would they want with a thirty-two year old?” He stopped, thinking, “Maybe she is right?” but reminded her that they had asked him. He had not pursued this.

So, it’s the night of the smoker. He arrived finding that his nerves were on edge. “How can this be?” he thought, “I’ve performed in front of thousands of people before and never have felt like this.” “Maybe they won’t want me?” Looking around he sees many Sinfonians at Tirey Hall. Some he did not realize were Sinfonians. One in particular was from his computer studies; he was actually a double major, Music and Computer Science.

It is from that point on that I, Douglas P. Champion, a.k.a. “Dangerous” Doug, a.k.a. that 1 guy, a.k.a. xintoo, the “Man” in this story can call all Sinfonians his Brother. Being accepted in Phi Mu Alpha has changed my life, and my partners for eternity. Those early thoughts were unfounded. Sinfonia is for all musicians that have the light burning in their hearts. I am proud to be in Phi Mu Alpha, a Sinfonian and hope that I can further the cause of music through my actions.
